1
Q

Strengths of Peterson and Peterson

Demonstrates how interference of verbal distractions can affect our ability to retain info in our short-term memory

Q

Strengths of MSM

A

Murdock (1962) discovered the serial position effect
Cases of amnesia show that brain injury can damage the LTM but not the STM

Q

Weaknesses Of MSM

A

Sometimes we remember info but not because we rehearsed it - E.g. the info is more meaningful to us so we remember it
Cases of amnesia show that some long-term memories are damages while others are not

Q

Strengths of Bartlett’s Reconstructive memory theory

A

Police use a cognitive interview to avoid eyewitnesses misremembering events which may lead to the wrong person being prosecuted
Conducted research using folk stories and images, which are a realistic use of memory

Q

Weaknesses of barletts reconstructive

A

Bartlett’s findings could be seen as subjective. Analyzed each story based off his own interpretations.
not very scientific
Cared about unique participants
as Yuille and
Cutshall (1986) who found that eye witnesses were in fact quite accurate and memories
were not reconstructed in the way that Bartlett may claim.
