Q

What caused the battle? Draw a diagram that shows chronologically the events that led to the battle.

A

1749: The Mataram Kingdom experienced a succession crisis following the death of Sultan Pakubuwono II. This led to a power struggle between his two sons, Prince Mangkubumi and Prince Mas Said.

1752: Prince Mangkubumi, also known as Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, rebelled against his younger brother, Prince Mas Said, who had become Sultan Pakubuwono III. The rebellion resulted in a prolonged war known as the Java War or the Diponegoro War.

1755: After several years of conflict, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) mediated the negotiations between Sultan Pakubuwono III and Prince Mangkubumi. The negotiations took place in the village of Giyanti (also spelled Gianti), leading to the signing of the Treaty of Giyanti on February 13, 1755.
