Who was Lev Vygotsky?
A Soviet psychologist (1896–1934), considered a genius with many followers. He died young and only became well-known in the West much later.
What is microgenetic development?
Development that occurs over brief periods, such as days or trials.
What is ontogenetic development?
Development across the lifetime of an individual.
What is phylogenetic development?
Development over the evolutionary lifetime of a species.
What is sociohistorical development?
Development influenced by historical changes in culture, values, and societal structures.
What mental functions are infants born with according to Vygotsky?
Elementary mental functions like sensation, memory, and attention.
How are elementary mental functions transformed into higher mental functions?
Through culture, which provides tools of mental adaptation such as language and mnemonic strategies.
