Q

¿___________ (How was your trip)?

A

¿Qué tal el viaje?
¿Cómo estuvo el viaje?
(How was the trip?)

In the case of the trip, its “condition” or “state” is temporary and can change from one trip to another. For example, you might say “El viaje fue largo” (The trip was long) if you’re talking about the general, inherent characteristic of the trip being long. But if you want to ask someone about their experience of the trip, you would use “estar” to ask about the specific, temporary condition or state of the trip during that particular journey, which is why you say “¿Cómo estuvo el viaje?” to inquire about how the trip was on that occasion.
