Unit 1 Kinematics Flashcards
AP Physics: Lesson 1: Scalars and Vectors in 1D (11 cards)
Scalars
A quantity that includes magnitude only
Vector
A quantity that includes magnitude and direction
What does magnitude refer to?
Size
What are some examples of scalar quantities?
Temperature, volume, energy, mass, distance, speed
How do you indicate that a quantity is a vector?
By using vector notation
What is vector notation?
We draw an arrow over the symbol of that quantity to show that it’s a vector quantity
What are some examples of vector quantities?
Displacement, position, velocity, acceleration
How do you visually represent a vector?
We draw an arrow. The length of that vector represents the magnitude, and the direction of where the arrow points represents the direction of the vector quantity
What is displacement?
Change in position
What quantity is displacement?
A vector quantity
What do the signs (+,-) of position and direction represent?
Describes their direction
