Unit 10: Cell Form And Function Flashcards
(31 cards)
Tissue
A collection of cells that work together to perform a specific function
Organ
Two or more tissues that combine and function together
Cytoskeleton
Structural protein networks in the cytoplasm that determine the shape of cells
Cellular Junctions
Structures that consist of cell adhesion molecules and other cytosolic proteins
Extracellular Matrix
A meshwork of proteins and polysaccharides outside the cell that help with structural support
Epidermis
A water resistant, protective outer layer of skin
Dermis
Layer beneath the epidermis that helps support it
Epithelial Tissue
A type of animal tissue in which cells are arranged in one or more layers
Microtubules
A hollow tube formed from tubular dimers
Tubulin
A protein that makes up a protein dimer
Centrosome
An organizing centre in the cell periphery in animal cells that maintain their shape and withstand compression
Cilia
Organelle that propels the movement of cells or substances surrounding the cell
Flagella
Organelle that propels the movement of cells or substances surrounding the cell
Spindle Apparatus
Separates replicated chromosomes during eukaryotic cell division
Microfilaments
Polymers of actin monomers
Actin
Protein involved in the composition of microfilaments
Intermediate Filametns
Polymers of proteins that vary according to cell type and provide the cell with mechanical strength
Dynamic Instability
The cycles of shrinkage and growth of microtubules
Motor Proteins
Aids in the movement of microtubules
Myosin
A motor protein found in muscle cells
Kinesin
Transports cargo toward the plus end of the microtubules at the periphery of the cell
Dynein
Carries it’s load away from the plasma membrane toward the minus end
Cell Adhesion Molecules
Cell-surface proteins that attach cells to one another and to the extra cellular matrix
Cadherins
Particularly important cell adhesion molecules
