Unit 2: Cells Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is active transport?
Goes from low to high and needs extra energy
What is passive transport?
Goes from high to low and requires less energy
How does the cell membrane help transport other substances?
It uses passive and active transport, is simple diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, endocytosis and exocytosis.
Special things about prokaryotic cells:
They have no nucleus, they’re not membrane bound, they divide by binary diffusion, and have cell walls.
Special things about eukaryotic cells:
They have a nucleus, they’re membrane bound, they divide by mitosis, and they’re either uni or multi cellular.
What is the purpose of cell division?
Growth and repair
What happens in interphase?
Growth and repair
Mitosis
The division of one nucleus into two
Prophase
Membrane disappears and spindle fibers appear
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle
Anaphase
Sister chromatids separate and move to the middle
Telophase
The membrane reforms
Cytokinesis
The division of cytoplasm, the final step
What is the cause of cancer?
When cell division is out of control
What are tumors?
A lump of cells that divides uncontrollably
Benign tumor
Abnormal cells that are clustered together
Malignant tumor
Breaks away from the tumor and moves to different parts of the body and spreads it
