Unit 3: Cellular Energetics Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is an enzyme?
Catalyst that speeds up the rate of reaction by lowering activation energy
Active site
area where substrate with specific shape will bind to being chemical reaction
substrate
what binds to active site to begin a chemical reaction
Induced fit theory
- Substrate must interact with active site
- Active site must change shape to fit the substrate
What pH does a high H+ concentration represent?
acidic 1-6
What pH does a high OH- concentration represent?
base 8-14
What does denaturing do to an enzyme?
Enzyme will begin to unfold changing the active site. The substrate and enzyme will no longer be able to interact decreasing the rate of reaction
Competitive inhibition
inhibitor competes with substrate for the active site
Non-competitive inhibition
inhibitor binds to allosteric site change the shape of the active site and the substrate cannot bind
activators
increase the rate of reaction by increasing the change that the substrate and active site will bind
metabolism
breaks down macromolecules
catabolic pathway
breaking down molecules
anabolic pathway
building molecules
