Unit 8: Ecology Flashcards
(16 cards)
Endotherms
Animals generate own body heat through metabolism
Imprinting
When mother is absent offspring will accept first moving object they see as their mother
Habituation
animal learns not to respond to a stimulus
Pheromones
chemical signals between members of same species that stimulate receptors and affect behavior
Agonistic behavior
aggressive behavior that occurs because of competition for food and other resources
Dominance hierarchies
members in group have established members that are the most dominant
Altruistic behavior
action done by individual that benefits another individual even at cost of own reproduction and survival
Mutualism
both organisms benefits
Commensalism
one organism is benefited and the other is not affected
Parasitism
one organism is benefited the other is harmed
Phototropism
way plants respond to sunlight
Gravitropism
way plants respond to gravity
Thigmotropsim
refers to the way plants respond to touch
predation
benefits predator harms prey
Competition
Both organisms are affected
exothermic
rely on external sources for heat
