A machine for beheading people, used as a means of execution during the French Revolution. J. I. Guillotin (1738-1814) was a French physician who lived during the French Revolution; proposed the use of a machine that would execute prisoners more "humanely.."

A paving material made of layers of small stones that are packed together with asphalt or tar. John McAdam (1756-1836) was a Scots engineer who invented a type of road surface where small stones are bound together with something like tar.
