Unit 7 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is genetic drift?
Events that cause a change in allele frequency
What is the bottleneck effect?
Large population reduced by non-selective disaster
What is the founder effect?
Few individuals become isolated from a population and establish a new gene pool
What is gene flow?
Transfer of alleles
Selection against the mean, with both extremes have the highest fitness?
Disruptive selection
If hardy weinberg equilibrium is the same as compared data?
Population is not evolving
Five conditions of hardy Weinberg?
- No mutations
- Random mating
- No natural selection
- Extremely large population size
- No gene flow
Three sources of evolutionary evidence?
- Fossil record
- Comparative morphology
- Biogeography
What are vestigial structures?
Conserved structures that serve no purpose
What is convergent evolution?
Similar adaptations in distant species due to similar environments
What are analogous structures?
Structures that are similar but have different evolutionary origins
What is biogeography?
The distribution of species geographically
What are phylogenetics?
Hypotheses of evolutionary history
Which part of a cladogram shows the common ancestor?
Root
Which part of cladogram shows outlier?
Basal taxon
Selection towards one extreme phenotype?
Disruptive selection
