Lines
A part of a poem that may or may not be in complete sentences, sentences may vary in length
Form
The way poem’s words and lines are laid out on the page
Stanzas
Are arranged into groups;
Each stanzas helps to convey a poem’s overall message
Speaker
The voice that talks to the reader;
It could be the author of the poem or a character created by the author
Traditional poetry
Poems that follow strict rules
Free verse poems
Ideas that drive each line that do not follow a fixed set of rules
Sound devices
The way we change how a poem sounds
Rhyme, rhythm, repetition, alliteration.
Rhythm
The pattern of stress and unstressed syllables in each line
A repeating pattern is a called a meter

Repetition of sounds at the end of words
Repetition
A word, phrases, or a line used more than once in a poem
Alliteration
The repetition or consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Assonance
The repetition of the sound of a vowel within the same line
Imagery
Is how something is depicted through the five senses in a phrases, words, lines etc.
Figurative language
Language used to over exaggerate something
Simile
A comparison between two unlike things that uses the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor
A comparison between two like things without using the word like or as
Personification
A description of an object, animal, idea, or a place as if it were human or had human qualities
Couplets
Rhymed pairs of lines.
Same rhyme
Same number of syllables
Recurring theme
A theme that is repeated in different stories but still the same
lyric poem (free verse)
A short poem that contains a single speaker who expresses personal thoughts and feelings and focus on a single, strong idea
Sonnet
A short poem with 12-14 lines with rhyme and rhythm
Ode
A sets off and address its important message
