UQ and LQ scanning Flashcards
Purpose of the scanning exam (4)
- identify major areas of involvement if patient cannot delineate
- eliminate confusing or conflicting information provided by patient/client
- assist in delineating source of the problem or complaint to a single area or region
- rule out referred pain or symptoms from another body system or region
the scan is a part of what section under the Regis HOAC model?
Examination- under data gathering “systems review”
3 components to the scanning exam:
1- observation
2- spine and extremity mobility assessment
3- strength and nerve root level assessment
Observation component of the scanning exam includes:
- a posture assessment
- skin integrity
- Functional movement assessment
What is a functional movement assessment?
- performed by assessing functional movement patterns through observation and to determine contribution of multiple body parts
- helps to delineate possibility of regional interdependence
Regional interdependence
determination of whether seemingly unrelated impairments in a remote anatomical region may contribute to or be associated with the patient’s primary complaint
Strength and nerve root level assessment…
- referred to as myotome testing
- assess strength of key muscles to each nerve root level
- use MMT procedure
- assess bilaterally
- grade response as WNL or DIMINISHED
skin integrity should check for…
Edema, bruising, areas of redness, temperature changes
functional movement assessment for UQ (patient should perform)
- hands behind back and neck
- comb hair
- bring cup to mouth
Add overpressure (OP) when patient has…
pain free AROM
Nerve root for Neck flexion
C1-2
Nerve root for lateral flexion at neck
C3
Nerve root for Shoulder shrug
C4
Nerve root for shoulder abduction
C5
Nerve root for elbow flexion OR wrist extension
C6
