vaccination Flashcards
(9 cards)
Who discovered the vaccine?
Edward Jenner
What do vaccines contain?
Dead pathogen, attenuated pathogen or just antigens
What does attenuated mean?
Weakened strain
What does the injection of a vaccine stimulate?
An immune response with the production of plasma cells, memory B and T cells
What do the memory cells provide?
Long term immunity
Why is a ‘booster’ injection given at a later date?
To ensure a more effective response due to exposure to more antigens
What is herd immunity?
The higher percentage of the population vaccinated against a pathogen, the less the risk of transmission
Why is this?
The probability of an infected person meeting a person without immunity will be low
What is an important factor in people getting vaccinated?
Perceived safety of the vaccine and its effectiveness in providing protection
