- thick, nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium
- slightly vacuolated due to presence of glycogen in these cells (removed in histological procedure)

- composed of loose fibroelastic conn. tissue
- devoid of glands
- contain thin walled veins

- inner: dense fibroelastic conn. tissue with many elastic fiber
- outer: rich venous plexus in the loose connective tissue layer
