Two types of variation
Discrete and continuous
Discrete variation
Discrete variation – can be divided up into distinct groups and is normally controlled by a single gene.
For example – pea seed colour Or ability to roll tong
Continuous variation
Continuous variation - does not fall into distinct groups but flows from one extreme to the other and is controlled by alleles from more than one gene (polygenic inheritance).
E.g. weight, height, marbling on lean meats
Environmental influences - discrete
Largely unaffected by environmental factors
Environmental influences- continuous
Influenced by environment
