venous vasculature system Flashcards
(45 cards)
what do capillaries come together to form?
small veins to form larger vessels until they become major central venous structures
Where does the systemic circuit carry blood?
from the left side of the heart to the body and returns blood to the right side of the heart
Where does the pulmonary circuit carry blood?
right side of the heart to the lungs and returns it to the left side of the heart
where/why does the coronary circuit carry blood?
delivers oxygenated blood to the heart for its metabolic needs
What type of blood do veins drain?
deoxygenated, carbon-dioxide rich blood
what are the two largest veins of the body?
superior and inferior vena cava
what does the superior vena cava drain?
structures superior to diaphragm
what does the inferior vena cava drain?
drain structures inferior to the diaphragm
What do the internal and external jugular veins primarily drain?
head and neck
What does the external jugular vein drain?
face and scalp
What does the internal jugular vein drain?
brain
What is the smallest jugular vein?
external jugular vein
What is the largest jugular vein?
internal jugular vein
Where does the venous blood from the brain drain?
dural sinuses
what is another name for the inferior dural sinus?
transverse sinus
What does the inferior dural sinus (transverse sinus) drain into?
internal jugular vein
what does the renal veins drain?
kidneys
what does the splenic vein drain?
spleen
what does the gastric vein drain?
drains the stomach
What does the superior mesenteric vein drain?
small intestine and much of the large intestine
What does the inferior mesenteric vein drain?
remainder of large intestine
What does the renal vein empty into?
inferior vena cava
what is the hepatic portal vein?
nutrient rich blood percolates through the liver where its processed and detoxified
what must travel through the liver?
Everything we ingest before entering the systemic circulation
