Vocabulary Flashcards
(14 cards)
Dendrites
short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body.
Neuron
electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information through electrical and chemical signals.
Axon
typically conducts electrical impulses away from the neuron’s cell body.
Myelin
essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Forms around axon and neuron.
Refractory Period
recovery phase after orgasm.
Synapse
structure that permits a neuron to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell.
Reuptake
The reabsorption of a neurotransmitter, by a neuron following impulse transmission across a synapse.
Endorphins
thought to act as blockers of the transmission of pain signals and also can produce a euphoric.
Agonist
A chemical that binds to a receptor and activates the receptor to produce a biological response.
Antagonist
The bad guy
Somatic Nervous System
associated with the voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles.
Automatic nervous system
acts as a control system that functions largely below the level of consciousness to control visceral functions
Sympathetic Nervous System
Its general action is to mobilize the body in a fight-or-flight response. It is, however, constantly active at a basic level to maintain homeostasis
Parasympathetic Nervous System
responsible for stimulation of “rest-and-digest” or “feed and breed”activities that occur when the body is at rest.
