W2: Lymphatic System Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the functions of the lymphatic System?
Fluid recovery
Immunity
Lipid reabsorption
What are lacteals?
Lacteals in the small intestine absorb dietary lipids which are either stored in the body or used immediately.
What is the function of lymph in the lymphatic system?
Lymph is a fluid that helps transport immune cells and remove waste products from tissues.
What are the factors which affect the flow of lymph?
Skeletal muscle contraction compress the lymphatic vessels.
Difference in pressure between abdominal and thoracic cavity during breathing.
Rhythmic contraction of lymphatic vessels.
Rapid flow of blood draws lymph out of the lymphatic ducts.
What is Cisterna Chyli?
- Cisterna Chyli is a lymphatic sac at the base of the thoracic duct (anteriorly between first and second lumbar vertebrae.
- It is formed by convergence of right and left lumbar lymphatic trunks and intestinal lymphatic trunk.
What are the primary lymphoid organs?
The primary lymphoid organs are the bone marrow and thymus, where immune cells are produced and mature.
What are the secondary lymphoid organs?
The secondary lymphoid organs include lymph nodes, spleen, and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT), where immune responses are initiated.
Where is MALT found within the body?
Mucosa- associated lymphatic tissue (MALT) is found:
respiratory system (nose),
digestive system (Peyer’s patches, appendix and anus),
urinary system(urethra) and
reproductive system (vagina).
Name the tonsils located within the oral cavity?
Types of Tonsils:
Lingual
Palatine
Pharyngeal (adenoids)
Where are lymph nodes located in the body?
Armpit = axillary lymph nodes
Neck = cervical lymph nodes
Groin = inguinal lymph nodes
Knee= popliteal lymph nodes
What is the role of the lymph nodes in the immune system?
Lymph nodes filter lymph fluid and serve as sites for immune cell activation and proliferation and they are sites for metastatic cancers.
What is the function of the spleen in the lymphatic system?
The spleen filters blood, removes old or damaged blood cells, and helps in immune responses.
What is the thymus, and what is its role in the immune system?
The thymus is an organ where T cells mature and gain the ability to recognize specific antigens.
