Preferring the mother’s voice over a stranger’s voice, able to have a proto-conversation with caregiver, eye gaze with caregiver.
What is the difference between canonical (reduplicated) and variegated babbling?
Canonical babbling involves repeating the same syllable (ba-ba, na-na). Variegated babbling involves mixing different sounds (ba de da) → Phonetic narrowing starts.
What is the onset of canonical and variegated babbling?
Canonical babbling occurs around 6 months, generally before 10 months. Variegated babbling starts between 8-10 months after the reduplicated babbling phase.
What is a newborn capable of when interacting with a caregiver?
Hearing frequency ranges of a human voice, distinguishing caregiver’s voice and face, preferring human voice over non-human sounds.
