Q

Define the terms macro & microstructure. Use examples to support your definitions.

A

Macrostructure refers to the overarching organisational pattern of a text. Macrostructure is related to coherence and content. Coherence – the text flows in a logical sequence and makes sense to the listener. Content – the macrostructural elements guide what information to include a text. In narrative, the macrostructure includes a setting (when & where), character, initiating event, internal response (feeling & plan), actions/attempts, resolution and consequence.

Microstructure refers to the linguistic features (vocabulary & syntax) used in a text. In narratives, this includes references, the use of conjunctions, syntax (sentence length and complexity), verbs, tense markers, linguistic and cognitive verbs, and descriptive language such as adjectives or adverbials of place, time and manner.
