Q

What does the term ‘Fast Mapping’ mean in the context of word learning? Provide a definition and example.

A

Fast mapping is the formation of a link between a particular referent and a new name. A strategy that allows a child to infer a connection between a word and its referent or entity referred to after only one exposure. Typically, nouns are easier to fast-map.
Child sees a clown for the first time, attention is fixed on the novel entity. Mother follows child’s line of sight and labels the object/entity “That’s a clown. The clown is playing. Hello, clown!” The child points to clown and says “Hi kown!”

Q

Explain the difference between a vocalisation and a ‘true word.’

A

A vocalisation can include babbling and cooing, while a ‘true” word is one that 1) phonetically resembles the adult form (although it may still be simplified – e.g., ‘dada’ for ‘dad’), 2) is used consistently and 3) occurs in the presence of the referent (e.g., saying ‘dada’ in presence of their dad or when pointing to photos of dad’).

Q

Name at least 3 systematic simplification processes you could observe in a 2.5 year old. Give an example of each.

A

Final Consonant Deletion (cup → cu-), Reduplication (water → wawa, or thank you →daedu), Consonant Harmony (tiger → tider, kittycat → tittytat), Weak Syllable Deletion (elephant → e-fant), Context sensitive Voicing (water →wadder), Cluster Reduction (stop → top, blue → boo), Fronting (cup → tup), Stopping (jump → dump, chair → tair), Liquid Gliding (red → wed), Vowel Neutralisation (airplane → airplən)
