[W7] Assessing Haemostasis Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the 5 steps of haemostasis?
Vessel spasm, platelet plug formation, coagulation, clot retraction, clot dissolution.
What factor converts fibrinogen to fibrin?
Thrombin.
What mediates platelet adhesion?
vWF and GPIb.
What receptor is essential for platelet aggregation?
αIIbβ3 (GPIIb/IIIa).
What pathway is assessed by PT?
Extrinsic pathway.
What does aPTT assess?
Intrinsic pathway.
What activates plasmin from plasminogen?
tPA (tissue plasminogen activator).
What are petechiae?
<3mm red-purple spots due to capillary bleeding.
What bleeding feature is more common in coagulation disorders than platelet disorders?
Haemarthrosis.
What test replaces bleeding time for platelet function?
PFA-100.
What does a raised D-dimer indicate?
Recent fibrin breakdown – suggests thrombosis but not specific.
What test result pattern suggests DIC?
↓ platelets, ↑ PT, ↑ aPTT, ↑ TT.
What drug is monitored using PT/INR?
Warfarin.
What drug can cause prolonged TT, PT, and aPTT?
Heparin.
