Week 1 Flashcards
(34 cards)
Centrifugation
Separating substances of different densities by the use of a centrifuge
Anti-coagulated
Blood that has not clotted
Plasma
Serum plus clotting factors (obtained from anti-coagulated blood) (fibrinogen - clotting factor)
Serum
only present due to clotting (remains fluid after clotting of blood)
Aseptic
without contamination (sterile)
Immunity
condition of being immune; resistance of an organism to a specific disease
Temperment
peculiar behavioral character and mental cast of an animal
Zoonotic
disease that can be passed from animals to humans
Inflammation
a localized protective response elicited by injury or destruction of tissues, which serves to destroy, dilute, or wall off both the injurious agent and the injured tissue
Definitive diagnosis
certain (sure) diagnosis
Humoral Immunity
mediated by antibodies formed by antigen-specific B lymphocytes
Maternal Immunity
that acquired by the neonate by transplacental transfer of immunoglobulins (primates) or from ingestion of colostrum (most other mammals) or via the yolk sac (birds)
Passive Immunity
the transfer of antibodies from a doctor in which they were produced to a recipient for temporary immunity
Diluent
diluting; an agent that dilutes or renders less potent or irritant
Adjuvant
assisting or aiding; a substance that aids another
Hyperglycemia
having excess of glucose (sugar) in the blood
Hypoglycemia
abnormally low concentration of glucose in the blood
Lethargic/lethargy
a condition of drowsiness; low consciousness
Mentation
mental activity or acuity (clarity)
Elicit
to draw out
Serologic/serological
involving examination of blood serum usually for aintibody
Differential diagnosis
determination of which one of several diseases may be producing the signs observed
Virulence
the degree of pathogenicity of a microorganism as indicated by case fatality rates and/or its ability to invade the tissues of the host
Fibrinogen
clotting factor
