What is feminism?
Feminism is a western social and political movement aiming to resist male domination
What is “western”?
Abstraction loosely referencing civilizations that emerged throughout Europe from Greek origins
What is male domination?
Domination is unequal power relations between men and women.
Where do male dominate?
Everywhere. Males control all of the resources and dominate every institution
What does the patriarchy do to women?
patriarchies oppress women and perpetuate female oppression
What does male dominated ideologies do to women?
assert female inferiority: e.g. a woman’s place is in the home, so women are forced to be associated with the domestic sphere
What did the modern industrial societies do?
created a separation between the world of business and the world of the home
What is the public sphere?
involves commerce, politics, professions, competition, laws, justice
What is the private sphere?
centers on nurturing, domesticity, affective relations, intimacy
What does the public sphere do for men and women?
welcomes/expects/rewards male participation and discourages/excludes/pathologizes female participation
What does private sphere do for men and women?
welcomes/expects/rewards female participation and discourages/excludes/pathologizes male participation
What do western patriarchal ideologies do for males and females?
It argues that both are totally opposite
What are some ideologies from western patriarchy?
- women=private and men=public

What happens with the sexed bodies?
male=man and female=woman
What are we conditioned to do?
Perform gender roles associated with their sexed body
What is true about gender?
It is not biological but instead social
What is true about gender roles, men, and religion?
Males in power produce religious metanarratives that ground/order/organize cultures
What is a metanarrative?
the “big story” that explains reality through appeal to a master idea—and determines a culture’s values
What do social customs do?
Dictate what we wear, do, decorate stuff, purchase items, behave, etc.
What does consumer capitalism do?
Encourages people do purchase stuff
What does consumer capitalism do to children?
Teaches acquisition of consumer goods, encourages boys to be masculine and girls feminine.
What does feminism strive to do?
- Feminism attempts to redefine notions of power
- Feminism strives to position females as humans
- Reject male demands
What is the final goal of the feminism movement?
That identifies and resists these patriarchal metanarratives that dictate specific roles for females and males irrespective of our ability, desire, needs, etc
