What are some events that have caused protests?
Events like the COVID19 pandemic and also the bubonic plague. Also, the industrial revolution
What were some effects of the industrial revolution?
It started the division of classes. Where the wealthy were capitalists and controlled the means of production
Who is the bourgeoisie class?
The capitalist/middle class who possesses the most of the economic resources and spends them
What is the proletariat?
The working class who produces wealth for the capitalists and earns a wage in return
What is the term conspicuous consuption?
Coined by Thorsten Veblen where he explains that the rich purchase useless, expensive items to signal their social status in public
What was freedom during the time of factory workers?
It meant freedom to work for a wage but also freedom to be exploited by capitalists.
What is marxism?
It is the theory that examines class relations. It also uses economic structure to explain social conditions
What is something that marxism argues?
Politics, law, culture, ideology, aesthetics, all produced by/influenced by economic system
What is the Marxist analysis on capitalism studies?
The capitalist controls the means of production.
The proletariat (workers) produces surplus value for the capitalist. Profit comes from exploitation of the worker.
What were some global solutions to capitalism?
All means of production held in common, surplus is owned by all, government eliminated, and no man alienated by their produce
What did labor union start doing to women?
Since they were mostly formed by men, they began to exclude them and used terms that were exclusive to men(Knights of labor). Began to see women as competition, forced to be stay at home moms, and also argued for family wage
Who did labor exploitation impact the most?
Females who mostly worked in textile factories. They organized movements and joined unions for trades practiced by males
