How have animals adapted to cold environments?
Thick fur/fat layers, Torpor, Hibernation, Behavioral patterns (Penguins)
How have plants adapted to cold environments?
Low streamlined shape, hairy leaves, deciduous leaves.
How have animals adapted to hot, dry environments?
Concentrated urine, Migration, burrowing, Nocturnal activity, life cycle with stages resistant to the dry season.
How have plants adapted to hot, dry environments?
Annual life cycle, small leaves, leaves with thick cuticle and rolled edges, hairy leaves (Banksia), Succulence, stomata in grooves.
In an arid area what are the advantages/disadvantages of succulent growth?
Advantages= Stored water = longer metabolism in dry weather. Disadvantage= Easy food for herbivores.
In an arid area what are the advantages/disadvantages for growth of a twiggy shrub?
Advantage= low surface area=low evaporation, hard to eat Disadvantage= small photosynthetic area.
Why are Biomes discrete entities?
Biomes can be useful for the classification of vegetation types.
