Week 2 Flashcards
(27 cards)
Cortex
The outer layer if the brain, folded to fit inside the skull
Sulcus
Groove/valley found in the cortex
Gyrus
Ridge/peak found in the cortex
Corpus Callosum
Largest band connects the two hemispheres of the brain
Frontal Lobe
Motor control
Decision & emotion regulation
Language production
Parietal Lobe
Somatosensory, touch, pressure temperature and pain
Spatial cognition and attention
(Navigate space, direct your attention to specific location)
Temporal Lobe
Visual perception and auditory process
Memory formation and storage
Language comprehension
Central Sulcus
A large central fissure that runs vertically down the sides of the brain separating the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe.
Laterilization of Function
One side of the Brian more crucial for a given function.
Sensory homunculus wit enlarged portions to represent the
Division of cortical space to each body part.
(Hands and mouth bigger to the brain)
Wada Test
Result:
Most people are left lateralized for speech.
Production and most people are right handed. (Left handed can have left lateralization)
Maybe similar in most individuals but not always the same.
Broca’s Aphasia:
Frontal Lobe:
Halting speech
Dropping words
Can understand language
Struggle forming fluent speech
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Temporal Lobe:
Continuous bbbling speech
Made up words
Lack of language comprehension
Brodman’s Areas
A system of 52 distinct regions of the cerebral cortex of the brain, each of which is associated with a different function.
English profanity categories
Religion
Copulation: words of sexual nature
Body related: body function
Slur: direct, harmful profanity perceived as more severe than all other categories.
English profanity Structure
Most are 4 letter words.
Most have closed syllables, starting and ending with a hard constant sound.
Monosyllable
Having only one syllable (as the word no)
Speech errors
When a profane word is present, the mind tends to react slower due to inhibitory process of the right inferior frontal gyrus.
Profanity Stroop Task
Presented a picture of a dog with a word overlaid over it,
participants tend to respond with slight delay when a profane word is presented.
Case of E.C.
Removal of entire left hemisphere.
“Expletives and curses were well articulated and clearly understandable.”
Language is not only generated in the left hemisphere cortex.
Automatic aphasia
Inability to produce a curse word.
Occipital Lobe
Visual processing
Lateral Sulcus
A deep fissure running horizontally that separates the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes.
Basal ganglia
Might be implicated in cursing,
Involved in integrations and selections of voluntary behaviors.
Kin recognition
early social skill that many animals develop to recognize their family members.
Survival benefits, attachment relationships, long period of immaturity.
