WEEK 2 AP1 Flashcards
(44 cards)
What is metabolism?
The sum of all chemical processes that occur in the body
What is responsiveness?
The ability of the body to detect and respond to changes
What is movement?
Motion of the whole body, individual
organs, single cells, and tiny structures within the cell
What is growth?
Increase in the size of the body, either by an increase in the size of existing cells
(hypertrophy) or by an increase in the number of cells through cell division (hyperplasia) or
both
What is differentiation?
Development of a cell from an
unspecialized state (stem cell) to a specialized state (mature cell)
What is reproduction?
Formation of new cells for tissue growth, repair, replacement or formation of a new individual
What does autopsy mean?
Post-mortem examination of the body
What does biopsy mean?
Examination of tissue from a living individual usually for a diagnosis of a disease or dysfunction
What does homeostasis mean?
Condition of equilibrium or balance in the body’s internal environment
What is intracellular fluid?
Fluid within the cells
What is extracellular fluid?
Fluid outside the cells
What are the 6 steps in homeostasis?
- Stimulus
- Receptors
- Control center
- Effector
- Response
- Return to homeostasis
What is negative feedback?
Negative feedback
reverses a change in
the controlled
condition
What is positive feedback?
Positive feedback system tends to strengthen or
reinforce a change of the body’s controlled conditions
What does disorder mean?
Is any abnormality of structure or
function
What does disease mean?
Illness is characterized by a recognizable set of signs
and symptoms
What body cavities belong to the dorsal body cavity?
Cranial and Vertebral cavity
What body cavities belong to the ventral body cavities?
Thoracic and Abdominal cavity
What are serous membrane?
Thin, double-layered
membranes that cover the viscera within the thoracic and abdominal cavities and also
line the walls of the thorax and abdomen/Serous membranes reduce friction
What is the mucous membrane?
Lines a body cavity that directly open to the outside
What is the cutaneous membrane?
Refers to skin that covers the entire body surface
What is the synovial membrane?
Connective tissue
membrane that lines the cavities of freely movable joints
What are meninges?
Protective covering that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord
What are chemical elements?
Fundamental substances that can’t be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical reactions
