Stages of Reading
Stage 0- Pre-reading stage. (birth-start of schooling)
Stage 1- Initial reading (decoding) (K-1st 5-7)
Stage 2- Confirmation, fluency and ungluing from print stage (grades 2-3)
Stage 3- Reading to learn the new. (grades 4-8)(ages 9-13)
Stage 4- Multiple viewpoints (9th-12th, ages 14-18)
Stage 5- Construction and reconstruction -a world view (college, 18+)
Stage 1 of reading
initial reading or decoding stage. k-1st grade ages 5-7.
Children sound out words. can read highly repetitive and patterned books.
Stage 2 of reading
Confirmation, fluency and ungluing from print. 2nd-3rd grade, 7-8 years old.
Children hone decoding abilities. Increase fluency and speed. start “ungluing” meaning reading becomes more automatic and they can focus on the story rather than each word.
Stage 3 of reading
Reading to learn the new: the first step. 4th- 8th grade. 9-14.
Children read to gain new information. Read beyond egocentric purpose. by the end, can read on a general adult level.
Stage 4 of reading
Multiple Viewpoints. 9-12th ages 14-18.
Children learn to navigate increasingly difficult concepts through text. Can consider multiple viewpoints.
stage 5 of reading
Construction and reconstruction - a world view. college, ages 18+
Read selectively to suit their purposes. Use analysis, synthesis and prediction to construct mean from text.
stage 0 of reading
Pre Reading. birth-begging of formal education.
Children develop emergent literacy skills including oral language, print awareness and phonological awareness.
