Week 9 Flashcards
Ability: Aptitude and Achievement Tests (22 cards)
Whats diff between achievement, aptitude and intell tests?
Achievement
- Attempt to assess what a person has learned following a specific course of instruction (based on curriculum)
- Areas examined often relate to reading, reading comprehension, writing, math
Aptitude
- Attempt to evaluate a student’s potential for learning rather than how much a student has already learned
- Aptitude tests typically predict more specific abilities such as math, science or music
Intell
- Attempt to predict future performance
- Predict abilities that are general and broad
What is the overlap between achievement, aptitude and intell tests?
They all measure human ability with each one examining a different type of ability.
In view of the considerable overlap of achievement, aptitude, and intelligence tests, all three concepts are encompassed by the term human ability.
Therefore, we distinguished among achievement, aptitude and intelligence as different types of ability
What are some limitations of Wechsler and Stanford-Binet?
- No tests of infants under 2 years
- Not appropriate for those with physical, sensory or language disabilities
- Not good for assessing learning disabilities/specific learning disorders
- Not appropriate for non-members of the dominant culture
- Correlate strongly with scholastic achievement and reading ability
Why are they called specialised test?
They are limited to a specific:
age range
and
area of cognitive ability
What are the purposes of academic assessments?
Can answer the following questions
1. Can their academic difficulties be better explained by their intellectual abilities?
2. Hypothesis generation/Testing
E.g., Factors contributing to problem behaviour
3. Test for a learning disorder/other learning problems
What are the purposes of individually administered tests?
- Assessing how well a student is learning
- Assessing how well a class, grade, school system or state is learning
- Identifying learning problems
- Determining whether a child is ready to proceed to the next grade
- Evaluating teacher effectiveness
- Determining readiness/suitability for tertiary programs
- Determining if an individual has mastered knowledge for professional advancement (Bar exam)
What is the purpose of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development?
Employed to determine children’s developmental functioning and plan management for kids with developmental delays.
Helps by:
1. Early Identification of intellectual delay
2. To individualise the management and to accommodate a child’s development and learning needs
3. To assess individual domains of development
E.g., cognitive delay
4. To help researchers as a research tool
What is the WIAT-III
The Weschler Individual Achievement Test - III
Applications for the WIAT-III
Used for:
1. Assessment of reading, spelling, maths, written expression, comprehension –> can identify strengths + weaknesses
2. Provide information to assist with diagnosis of specific learning disorders or eligibility for educational service
3. Can provide info to assist w planning interventions
How many subtests and domains are in the WIAT-III
16 Subtests
7 Domain Composites
What are the 7 domain composites for the WIAT-III?
Oral Language
Total Reading
Basic Reading
Reading Comprehension & Fluency
Written Expression
Mathematics
Maths Fluency
What is the WRAT-4?
Wide Range Achievement Test - 4th Ed
What does the WRAT-4 assess?
Grade Level Functioning
Word Reading
Spelling
Maths
Sentence Comprehension
What is the reliability of the WRAT-4
Good Alternate Forms (Immediate and Delayed)
Internally Consistent
What is the validity of the WRAT-4
Content
Concurrent
What is the LAC-3?
Lindamood Auditory Conceptualisation Test - 3rd Ed.
What is the purpose of the LAC-3?
Assessment of reading related abilities
Assessment of phoneme awareness/auditory conceptualisation skills
- Essential for Adequate reading ability
- Phoneme awareness/auditory conceptualisation play a central role in specific reading disabilities
Purposes:
1. Identification
2. Quantification of strengths and weaknesses
3. Tracking Progress
4. Research
What are the 3 components of the LAC-3?
Auditory
Visual
Language
What are the categories of the LAC-3?
Precheck
Category 1: Isolated Phoneme Patterns
Category 2: Tracking Phonemes
Category 3: Counting Syllables
Category 4: Tracking Syllables (Multisyllables)
Category 5: Tracking Syllables and Phonemes (Multisyllables)
What is the reliability of the LAC-3?
Internally Consistent
Good Test-Retest (2 weeks)
What is the validity of the LAC-3?
Good Concurrent
Good Criterion
What are the benefits of achievement tests?
Allow the identification of children, classrooms, schools and systems that are performing poorly – implement interventions
Facilitate diagnosis of learning difficulties – implement interventions
Allows accurate placement of students in appropriate learning environments – beneficial for all students.
Identifies areas of strength and weaknesses – target weak areas
