WW1 - Aboriginal perspective Flashcards
(5 cards)
What was enlistment like for Aboriginal peoples in WW1
Initially, the first nations peoples were restricted by law (defence act 1909) , as they were told they were “not substantially of European origin or descent” and therefore barred from service
Why did aboriginal peoples want to enlist
Wished to gain greater respect and equality from service.
Would receive same rate as Non-Indigenous soldiers.
Hoped that equity would come from their participation.
How did the initial decline towards aboriginal peoples change?
In 1917, as war progressed and more soldiers/troops were needed, the officers declared to accept “half-castes” to enlist if they had one parent of European background.
What other battles did the Indigenous community later participate in
Gallipoli, Western front and Middle eastern wars
