What is trench warfare
the term “trench warfare” is a type of combat in which opposing teams fight from trenches facing each other.
A form of static defensive warfare.
What does no man’s land refer to
No man’s land = the desolate, barren and dangerous empty space between enemy’s trenches, often exposing soldiers to enemy’s fire
Dangers of Trench warfare
Enemy attacks (using multiple techniques/strategies)
immersion in water = trench foot.
Trench collapsing
Often dealt with tics, lice, flies, mosquitoes.
Multitude of diseases: Cholera, typhus and dysentery (major diseases).
Key inventions of trench warfare
longe range artillery.
chemical weapons.
digging of trenches.
What weapons, machinery and strategies were most commonly used in trench warefare
Guns, Heavy Artillery, Gas and Tanks. Means of communication = telephones and wireless radio systems. Aircrafts = aerial warfare. Navy = submarines and underwater explosives.
Origins of trench warfare
KEY feature of WW1 *although invented before hand.
Began on Western front 1914 in minor amounts, and then progressed to large scale frontline trenches by 1916.
Why was trench warfare important
Although not a full proof method, trenches offered some protection whilst hindering the enemies ability to advance in their strategy, therefore prolonging the war (leading to stalemate).
