Flashcards in 1 Intro to Pathology Deck (15):
1

What is pathology?

definition: study of disease, its biochemical & structural changes.
[things "gone bad"]
Clinical definition: study of disease by lab methods

2

Basic Sciences means?

normal structure/function

3

Define etiology? give examples?

-initiating cause of disease
-genetic, acquired, multifactorial, hypoxia, etc

4

Define morphology?

"What it looks like" (gross & histologically)

5

Anatomic pathology is?

gross & microscopic methods

6

Biopsy is what? What's the dif between excisional vs incisional?

-chunk of tissue removal
-Incisional: a piece of lesion is removed
-Excisional: whole lesion removed excised or incised

7

What do clinical pathologists do?

lab med. (anything "non-morphologic", such as biochemical, immunologic, etc)

8

What is cytology?

exam of scraped/shed cells from body surfaces for purpose of diagnosis.

9

Diagnosis has 2 definitions. Name them.

1-name given to a disease
2-process of arriving at diagnosis

10

Define lesion.

any abnormality of gross, histologic, genetic/molecular structure of the body. (doesn't have to be visible, it can be a lesion of a protein for ex.)

11

Define pathophysiology.

abnormal physiologic or biochemical activity resulting in signs, symptoms, lab abnormalities.

12

Define prognosis.

probability a patient will get better/worse & how fast

13

Define risk factors?

sex,age, etc

14

Define "sign"

observable (by sight, palpation, etc) manifestation of disease

15

Define "Symptom"

subjective perception
