1.1 Anatomy - Respiratory system Flashcards
(6 cards)
Explain the term ‘excess post-exercise oxygen consumption’ (EPOC)
(additional) volume of oxygen needed to return body to pre-exercise
state
* alactacid and lactacid components
* aerobic energy production during recovery
* oxygen used to break down of lactic acid
* replenishment of myoglobin
* (aerobic energy used to) resynthesise ATP / replenish PC
Explain why a knowledge of Excess Post exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) is beneficial
to an 800 metre runner when planning a training session.
- EPOC restores PC/phosphagen/ATP/oxy-myoglobin and removes lactic acid
- Warm up to reduce oxygen deficit
- Cool down to speed up removal of lactic acid
- Include breaks to allow 2-3mins (full) PC restoration
- Use of cooling aids to speed up recovery
what are the two stages of epoc
alactacid - fast
lactacid - slow
Why does lactic acid accumulation occur quickly during high intensity anaerobic activity?
there is a large oxygen deficit as oxygen demand is not met
describe the alactacid component of EPOC
re-synthesis of ATP and PC stores
replenish myoglobin stores
30s for 50%
3 mins for 100%
describe the lactacid component of EPOC
5 to 8 litres of oxygen to return body to pre-exercise state
removal of lactic acid and replenishment of glycogen
1 hour
