What is the background on Yalta?
A
- The war was almost at a win in Feb 1945
- 1944 Stalin set up a pro-Soviet gov. in Poland (also thought he had control over Eastern Europe)

What were the agreements of the Yalta conference
A
- All agreed Russia would receive reparations HOWEVER no fixed price, 10 bil was suggested
- USSR would keep eastern Poland while Poland got eastern Germany
- Stalin promised free elections in Europe
- Stalin declares war on Japan after 3 months into surrender of Germany to help USA
- Germany is split into 4 zones controlled by USA, USSR and Britain
- UN is established

- Stalin’s interpretations of free elections were different to the USA’s democratic outlook
- The Red Army ( controlled by USSR ) occupied most of Eastern Europe and East Germany
