3.2 Changes in Industry Flashcards
What was the 5 yr plan? + when?
1952-57 - Mao’s attempt to re-kindle the industry of China by upleveling production
What was the starting point for industry in 1949?
(current status + people + allies)
- No industry - only in Manchuria (war destroyed everything)
- Lots of resources and hard working people
- Help of USSR at aid
What was achieved in the 5yr plan?
Coal production doubled, electric power production trippled and steel production quadroupled
+ workers salaries raised by 19%
In what 2 ways was China different from 1957 to 49? (what evidence backs this up?)
Better infrastructure and transport (1 mil bicylces produced and bridges built to improve trading)
Production increase (coal x2, electricity x3)
What was The Great Leap Forward?
Mao’s attempt to duplicate the success of the first five year plan
Why did Mao think he could achieve the 2nd 5yr plan despite how ambitious it was?
- his belief that ‘anything can be achieved if there is will to succeed’
- needed to show communism > capitalism
- Food production had increased
- China would be able to increase industry and agriculture at the same time
How was TGLF (great leap forward) implimented?
- Collectivisation
- Enthusiasm in workers
- Backyard furance production of steel
- Gov control businesses
- Big construction projects
What were the positive effects of TGLF?
In 1958 11 mil steel produced
rises in production
What were the negative effects of TGLF?
- Collectivisation failed - 50 mil die of famine (1958-60 = bitter years)
- Bad quality steel
- Industry output drops by 55%
- MAO RESIGNS AS HEAD OF STATE! - Liu Shaoqi take over
How significant was the great leap forward comapred to 5 yr plan?
- TGLF: rise production, lots of people died, change of leaders, lots of loss
- Stayed same to 5 yrs: steel production high, good transport, still no food, CCP in charge
