Gendered Physical Behaviour – Francis 2005.

A

Boys and girls tend to sit separately in class. Whilst girls can resist schooling, they do this in a ‘passive’ way by reading magazines or just not participating. For boys, however, they do this in a much more ‘active’ way by having confrontations with the teacher. This creates a sense that girls are ‘invisible’ in the classroom. Boys also dominate more physical space through playground play, sprawling over desks and taking up more space when behaving boisterously in the classroom. This is seen as an exercise of patriarchal power and control by some boys over girls.
