What happened with Gloucester and Hastings in May 1477?

A

In May 1477 Gloucester supported Hastings campaign in assisting Mary of Burgundy against the threat of a French invasion
But this was against E4 wishes and broke the terms of the Treaty of Picquigny.
Louis XI angrily reminded E4 of his obligations, and he called a halt to the activities of H This brought an end to Gloucester’s plans to recommit to war and drove a further wedge between the brothers.

How did this effect Clarence?

A

Clarence’s future was sealed by these events.
He was angered by E4 dismissal of his plans to marry Mary of Burgundy.
To make matters worse another marriage proposal was dismissed by E4, this time between Clarence and the King of Scotland’s sister, Margaret.
Clarence retreated to Warwick Castle, whereupon an extraordinary set of events followed.

What did Clarence do to Ankarette Twynho?

A

In 1477 Clarence arrested Ankarette Twynho (a servant of his late wife), accusing him of poisoning his wife, Isabel, who had died on 22 December 1476.
He was found guilty by a packed jury and was executed.

A

E4 arrested Clarence in June 1477 and sent him to the Tower of London.
E4 hesitated, but in January 1478 Parliament took the Duke of Clarence’s future into their own hands.

What was Clarence accused of by Parliament?

A

Accusations were made against him, but no one stood in his defence.
The accusations included his securing a certified copy of his nomination as heir to the throne in the proceedings of the Parliament and keeping it secret, his spreading of rumours of E4 illegitimacy, and his judicial murder of Ankarette Twynho.

While these accusations may have been true they did not add up to treason yet C was still attainted.
