Henry Tudors marriage to Elizabeth of York Flashcards

1
Q

Why did HT repeal Richard Ill’s proclamation as king?

A

Following Henry VIl’s proclamation as king, he repealed Richard Ill’s proclamation as king from 1484.
It was important that he did this, as the proclamation had declared Elizabeth of York illegitimate.

The new king could not marry and have heirs with a woman who was illegitimate, and so this matter had to be dealt with before he could confirm his declaration to marry her.
