Q

what are the 4 steps of MAOIs?

A
  1. norepinephrine is released into the synapse
  2. norepinephrine binds with its post synaptic receptor
  3. the action of norepinephrine is terminated by the enzymes monoamine oxidase and catecholamine 0- methyltransferase
  4. the monoamine oxidase is inhibited and norepinephrine is not broken down as quickly and therefore its action is prolonged

Q

what are the 5 steps of SSRIs?

A
  1. serotonin is released into synapse
  2. serotonin binds to its post synaptic receptor
  3. serotonin binds to its pre synaptic receptor
  4. the reuptake of serotonin results in less serotonin being released
  5. SSRIs block the re uptake of serotonin and therefore more will be available in the synaptic cleft

Q

what do TCAs do?

A

inhibit the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin into the presynaptic terminal allowing norepinephrine and serotonin to accumulate in the synapse and thus enhance their action
