Avoiding
Low assertiveness and low cooperation. Useful in trivial issues, cooling off periods, or when facing powerful opponents.
Accommodating
Low assertiveness, high cooperation. Effective when you’re wrong, the issue matters more to the other party, or to build goodwill.
Competing
High assertiveness, low cooperation. Best used when you have power, are sure of facts, or won’t interact again.
Compromise
Moderate assertiveness and cooperation. Each side gives up something; useful with scarce resources or as a fallback.
Collaborating
High assertiveness and cooperation. Win-win approach that works best when conflict is not intense and both sides have useful info.
Effects of Avoiding & Accommodating
Leads to conflict suppression; may not solve problems and can lead to future visible conflict.
Effects of Competing
Often results in destructive conflict; damages group functioning.
Effects of Collaborating & Compromising
Most likely to result in constructive conflict; promotes group functioning and performance.
