Immune system Flashcards
histiocytosis
group of syndromes involving abnormal increase in white blood cells “histiocytes”; they begin to accumulate in cells where they normally don’t function and cause damage to healthy tissue
interstitial
space between cells in a tissue
Langerhans
cells populating epidermis as a network of immune sentinels. Induce first reaction against pathogens encountered by the skin.
mononucleosis
viral infection causing fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands. Caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.
macrophages
type of phagocyte; white blood cells that engulf and destroy microorganisms, clear out debris and dead cells, and stimulate other immune cells.
squamous cell
cells making up the middle and outer layers of the skin.
polys and bands
polys are most numerous white blood cell type; first line of defense. Bands are immature polys.
leukocytes
white blood cells; protect against illness and dsiease.
intertriginous
skin folds; area where opposing skin folds come into contact at rest and rub against eachother/chronic skin occlusion.
Monilia infection
thrush. Mycelial infection which usually involves the mucous membranes.
creme caseous necrosis
cell death in which tissue maintains a cheese-like appearance. Most commonly caused via tuberculosis.
CMV cytomegalovirus
common virus retained for life; often asymptomatic. Can cause high temps, muscle aches, rash, general malaise, swollen glands.
candidiasis
fungal infection caused by yeast (Candida). Normally lives on the skin and inside the body naturally without problems.
