What is stress?
Stress is a response to a situation that threatens, or appears to threat, one’s sense of well being
What is a stressor?
Something that triggers a stress response
What is an acute stressor?
Short-term finite stressful situations
- studying for finals, competing for a football game
What is a chronic stressor?
A long-term stressor with not definitive end
- poverty, high pressure job, no job
What does feeling frustrated mean?
An emotion expirenced when something prevents us form reaching a goal
- Not getting parking in a busy parade because someone blocked you
What does feeling pressure mean?
An expectation or demand that one should act in a certain way
What does feeling conflict mean?
Discomfort due to to or more incompatible goals or impulses
What is the approach approach conflict?
Having to choose between two good choices EX: chocolate cake or ie cream for dessert
What is the avoidance-avoidance
Having to choose between two bad two undesirable choices
EX: No job or bad job offer
What is the approach-avoidance conflict?
Both choices have pros and cons to each side
EX: having a GREAt job offer but having to move far away
What does feeling endangered mean?
Life threatening situations that produce stress
What is a daily hassle
Also known as microstressors - small, everyday problems that accumulate to become a sorcerer of stress
EX: Bad/rude drivers
What is a life change?
altered circumstances requiring adjustment
EX: marriage, death illness, final, breakup, starting university or a new school
What is a traumatic event?
Unexpected disruptive events such as natural disaster or Victim of violence
What is post taumatic stress disorder
An anxiety disorder caused by a major traumatic event. Characterized by persistent, frightening thoughts or memories of the event, along with anxiety and depression
