Old Prison System:

A
  1. In the early 1800s, conditions remained unchanged.
  2. All prisoners were housed together, hardened criminals mixed with women and children.
  3. Prison warders were unpaid. They had to earn their money by charging prisoners.
  4. At Newgate Gaol, 257 of the poorest prisoners lived in an area for only 150 people.
