- Trial by ordeal continued
- Also introduced trial by combat
- This method was used to settle disputes over large sums of money or land.
- This was seen as a more dignified option for wealthier people.

- In 1500 it was 2.5 million by 1700 it was between 5&6 million.
- Crimes were easier to get away with.
- The role of town constables grew to cope with increasing crime rates.
- Employed by authorities, expected to turn in serious criminals to the courts.

Ineffectiveness of Constables:
A
- Were not particularly good at hunting down criminals.
- Thief takers were paid a reward for catching a criminal and delivering them to the law
- This method was open to corruption as some criminals operated as thief takers
- Most famous one was Jonathan Wild. Assumed the title ‘Thief Taker General’ in 1718
- He was executed in 1725
