- Hawkhurst Gang operated from 1735-49
- Moved the goods at speed and supplied a network of traders that were willing to sell
- An estimated 3 million pounds weight of tea was smuggled into Britain each year.

- Prime Minister William Pitt lowered import duties in the 1780s
- In the 19th century the were reduced again
- Previously smugglers could offer a much better price than the law
- Less difference in price so the extent of smuggling dropped dramatically.

- Tobacco and alcohol are smuggled into the country in huge quantities everyday
- Both are cheaper on the continent where taxes on such goods are lower.
- Goods are sold to make a profit.
- There is a big public demand as smuggled alcohol and tobacco are much cheaper than in the shops.
