Trial by Ordeal:
A
- Used when there was not enough evidence to prove that a person was guilty or not.
- For trial by hot iron or water, heat was used to burn if the burn healed well, they were judged to be innocent.
- Trial by cold water, accused was thrown into the water anyone who sunk was innocent and was hauled up again.

Role of the Community:
A
- Tithings. All men aged over 12 were responsible for the actions of the others. One man from each met regularly with the king’s shire reeve.
- Hue and cry, they should shout for help. Everyone who heard it was expected to help chase and capture suspects.

Population Increase:
A
- In 1500, population was 2.5 million but in 1700 it was between 5&6 million
- Made it easier for criminals to get away with crimes.
- Role of the town constable was expanded.
- They were employed by the authorities, expected to turn in serious criminals to court and helped with local administrative issues like road cleaning.
