What is foot and mouth (FMD)?
A
A viral disease of cloven hoof stock, both domestic and wild.

What is the morbidity of FMD?
A
Almost 100%, FMD is extremely contagious.

Why is FMD a pathogen of concern?
A
- It is a potential organism for agroterrorism.
- Can result in severe economic loss.

Where has FMD been eradicated from?
A
- North America (Since 1929).
- Europe.*
*Virus was found in the UK, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands in 2001.

How is FMD transmitted?
A
Direct contact with secretions and excretions from: lesions, respiratory, oral, semen, milk, or fomites.

By what routes does FMD enter the body?
A
- Skin.
- Mucous membranes.
- Oral.
- Respiratory.

What are the clinical symptoms of FMD?
A
- Fever.
- Vesicles on mucous membranes: Teats, hard palate, tongue, interdigital space.
- Secondary infections can cause laminitis.
- Mastitis can be caused secondary to the vesicles on the teats.

What method is used to eradicate FMD in an area where an outbreak has occurred?
A
Depopulation and burning the carcasses.

- Soremouth.
- Swine vesicular disease.
- Bovine viral diarrhea.
- Foot Rot in cattle.
- Vesicular stomatitis.
- Bluetongue.
