(3 cards)
What Is Persuasion?
= the process of changing or reinforcing attitudes, beliefs, values or behaviour.
change or reinforce a belief
Motivating Listeners
Using dissonance to motivate listeners - how you experiment cognitive dissonance? for e.g. if you smoke, and then you learn that smoking increases your chances of lung cancer. - sens eof disorganization
How to use it? For ex, a mayoral candidate in politics usualy tries 1st to make his/her audience aware of problems in the community, then blames the current mayor for most of the problems. Then, suggests that these problems can be solved if she/he is voted.
using needs to motivate listeners
using positive motivation - you have to know what your listeners value
using negative motivation
Developing Your Persuasive Speech
Choosing a persuasive topic
Developing your purpose - Proposition of Fact (whether sth is true or false; e.g More ppl are burning U.S. flags today than during the 1960s), Proposition of value (a statement that calls for the listener to judge the worth or importance of sth; e.g Rock is better than classic music), Proposition of policy (advocates a specific action - changing a policy, procedure, behaviour, e.g. All handguns should be abolished)
